Two years ago, we launched the Grassroots Donor Project. The goal was to empower ordinary citizens to own the funding side of Congressional campaigns – the first step in taking back our politics and our government. That experiment was a terrific success and helped me develop the Grassroots Democracy Act, a proposal to fund campaigns through a hybrid of grassroots donations and public matching dollars.
In order to showcase the multiple match feature of the Grassroots Democracy Act, my aim in this election cycle is to provide a 5-to-1 match on as many grassroots donations as possible. Here’s how:
- Precinct Level Matching Funds.We’ve identified a number of precincts in my district for targeted grassroots donor recruitment. In each of those precincts, higher donors are stepping forward and offering to provide a 5-to-1 match on the first $1000 of grassroots donations collected. That means that if you live in one of the selected precincts, whatever you contribute towards the $1000 goal -- $5, $10, $25 --- will earn the multiple match.
- General Matching Fund.If you live anywhere outside the targeted precincts, your grassroots donation will still earn a 5-to-1 match from a general matching fund of $100,000 that we are setting aside in our campaign and will replenish with traditional donations.
Whether you’re in one of our targeted precincts or not, it’s all about the match. That’s what amplifies your voice and helps us model the kind of campaign funding system that will put ordinary people back in charge.
